TrainingPeaks Releases
From Peaksware Help Center
April 18, 2008
There are some fundamental improvements to how we handle Heart Rate zones for all future workouts.
- Key change #1: We now support 1-10 HR zones, and we no longer combine time for zones 5a,5b,5c if you are using "5" zones.
We are changing the Heart Rate zones system to be more flexible and allow from 1-10 zones. When we calculate time in zone, it will be a 1:1 relationship, no more combining data from multiple zones into a single zone. For reporting though, we will still only support 5,6 or 7 zones. In a few months, with the major release of TrainingPeaks 2.0, we will support additional zones in all of our reports.
- Key change #2: We now record all zone ranges and labels for every workout, enabling you to have accurate historical records of time in zones, and their corresponding zone labels and zone ranges. If your are using TrainingPeaks Professional Edition, you can also now have different numbers of zones for different clients.
Heart rate zones will now be stored "per workout" so historical time in zone data, and their corresponding labels for each time in zone will always be accurate. You can also change the number of zones any time and you can even use different numbers of zones. For example, you might use 7 hr zones for running, and 5 hr zones for cycling. You are free to change the zone ranges at any time, and all historical data and zone ranges will not change, they will reflect exactly what the zone ranges were at the time of the workout.
- Key change #3: There are now multiple calculation tools for HR zones.
We have several new calculation engines that support many different zone methodologies. If you follow a particular zone system, you can use their zone calculator, and the number of zones as well as the zone ranges will automatically be calculated and configured for you. You will also be able to manually override these values.
- Key change #4: If you are using the TrainingPeaks Professional Edition, each client can have different numbers of HR zones.
Using TrainingPeaks Professional Edition, you still can set an initial "default" number of zones, which will be honored when you add clients. However, you can go to the clients Preferences section and change the number of zones or the zone ranges at any time. All old workouts will stay the way they were, all new workouts will reflect your new choices for zones.
- Key change #5: We discontinued all use of Messenger, our old application for downloading certain devices
Use of Messenger was completely discontinued on April 18th; we have replaced the use of Messenger with our new tool called Device Agent. If using a Garmin 301, use Garmin's Training Center software to download the 301, create a .tcx file of the workout and upload the workout via the Daily Log as shown here: Garmin
All old workouts will see effectively no change when this new system for HR zones is implemented, we will have stored all old workout zone information so it will no longer change as you modify zones. Your zones will be set automatically to 5,6 or 7 depending on your current zone choices. Only those that have been using the default 5 zones will need to realize that we no longer have 5a,5b and 5c.. The default for Trainingpeaks is now 7 zones, and will still follow Joe Friel's 1,2,3,4,5a,5b,5c system, but we will be actually calculating time in those specific zones, not blending the zone 5 data together.
